How Claude Connectors work under the hood
When you connect a data source, Claude indexes the content using Anthropic’s retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline. Documents are chunked, embedded and stored in a secure vector database. When a user asks a question, Claude searches the indexed content, retrieves the most relevant chunks, and uses them as context to generate an accurate, cited response.
This means Claude doesn’t just pattern-match keywords — it semantically understands the question and finds the most relevant information across all your connected sources, even if the wording doesn’t exactly match.
Security and data privacy
Anthropic has built Claude Connectors with enterprise security requirements in mind:
- Data isolation — each organisation’s data is isolated. Your documents are never used to train Claude or shared with other customers.
- Encryption — data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256). Indexed content is stored in your dedicated environment.
- Permission inheritance — Claude respects the permissions from your source systems. If a Google Drive file is restricted to certain users, only those users can access it through Claude.
- SOC 2 Type II — Anthropic maintains SOC 2 Type II compliance, with regular third-party audits of security controls.
- Data retention controls — you control how long indexed data is retained and can delete it at any time.
Claude Connectors vs manual context
